No parent wants to force their child onto city streets to beg, but that’s what is happening in Senegal. Many village parents think their children are going to the city for religious boarding school. Instead, heartless traffickers force many kids into begging slavery.

The children are called talibés, and Free the Slaves is committed to ending this form of child slavery. You can help.

Free the Slaves is proud to announce a new campaign on the Global Giving crowdfunding platform. The project will support social service providers in the Kolda region, where the children come from. It will change the lives of 400 talibés across 10 communities by improving basic social services and raising awareness about the risks of sending children away from home. Learn more here.

We urgently need your help, and that of your network, to make this campaign successful! Especially today, when all contributions will be matched, dollar for dollar on the Global Giving platform.

Three ways to help:

  1. Donate – your gift makes freedom possible.

  2. Share the campaign link with your family, friends, coworkers and everyone you know.

  3. Ask your network to share the campaign

GlobalGiving’s Accelerator is more exciting than ever! We’re on our way to raising $5,000 from 40 donors. With your help, we know we can succeed!

Free the Slaves needs 11 donors and $1,100 by March 29th to earn a permanent spot on GlobalGiving’s site and become part of the GlobalGiving network. We still have time, but we need your support!

Thanks to you, Free the Slaves will be able to ensure that the most basic of human rights is respected: freedom.

Can you help end the conditions that cause modern slavery?

Building Futures in Akure: Survivors Turn Courage into Opportunity

In Akure, Nigeria, seventeen survivors took their next steps toward independence. Gathered for a two-day workshop hosted by Free the Slaves (FTS) and Emmanuel World Children Foundation—with support from the Center on Human Trafficking Research and Outreach (CenHTRO)—they learned new skills, shared experiences, and received tools to rebuild their livelihoods. What began as a training became a celebration of resilience: survivors standing together, leaders listening, and a community committing to sustained empowerment long after rescue.
