Our Global Ambassador Katie Ford put on a much buzzed about benefit for Free the Slaves last Wednesday at The Standard in New York. The finally tally is still being made, but by all accounts the event raised good money—money we can put into continuing to free enslaved people all around the world.

Wall Street Journal: Shining Spotlight on Slavery
On Wednesday, at the Top of the Standard, former Ford Models CEO Katie Ford brought out Helena Christensen, Michael Stipe, her ex-husband Andre Balazs, Liev Schreiber and Selma Blair for a benefit for Free the Slaves, which helps to liberate the 27 million enslaved around the world.
“Can you believe it’s so many people?” asked Ms. Ford, who was exposed to the issue when she went to a discussion about it three years ago at the U.N. “I thought slavery didn’t exist anymore. I could never believe that it existed in the first place.”
“Has Oprah done a special on this?” asked the photographer Todd Eberle. “I don’t know,” responded the fashion designer Nicole Miller.

Liev Schreiber, checking out an auction to support the Free the Slaves charity at New York’s Standard Hotel. The actor chatted with board members and watched the live auction, while Selma Blair and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe also mingled at the event.

Some cool New Yorkers opened their wallets to help Katie Ford‘s Free the Slaves organization on Wednesday. The benefit was held at ex-hubby Andre Balazs‘ Top of the Standard nightclub, and the handsome hotelier also served as a co-host of the charity soiree with R.E.M’s Michael Stipe and model Helena Christensen (who arrived at 9:45 p.m. after tucking her kids into bed). Balazs contributed to the fund’s coffers, too, spending $5,000 on a Steven Klein photograph of a women’s leg protruding from the doorway of one of the Standard’s rooms.
Fashion designer Nicole Miller took home a series of cooking classes from the French Culinary Institute for $2,000. Other supporters of Ford’s cause included Liev Schreiber and Selma Blair, who said at the door that “Andre invited me” and spent a good chunk of the night laughing one-on-one with Balazs.
