Lots of people ask us if we’re “winning the war” on slavery. The truth is that in many vital ways, we are!

Free the Slaves has awakened the world to the fact that slavery still exists. We’ve crafted a global blueprint for what needs to be done. We’ve pilot-tested programs that have freed more than 13,000 people, and we’re ready to scale-up around the world.

We are on the cusp of history’s second great emancipation.

But the truth is also that during the next four years, the anti-slavery movement might be forced to retreat. The Trump administration has proposed radical reductions in federal funding for anti-slavery programs. Trump cuts to other human rights and international aid programs could make slavery worse.

That’s why I have been writing to you ever since the president’s 2018 budget proposal was released a few weeks ago. We must not let cruel cuts from the White House change the course of history.

U.S. government funding has helped Free the Slaves and our front-line partner organizations liberate individuals and entire communities. One of our most recent success stories is Pooja in India. She endured brutal conditions in slavery at a brick kiln. Now, she’s free and learning to sew so that she can support herself in freedom.

We must not abandon other children like Pooja. With your help, our field programs will remain strong despite funding cuts from the Trump administration.

If you have been able to renew or increase your contribution to Free the Slaves over the past few weeks, thank you! If not, I hope you will consider donating today.

There are thousands of people just like you who have made Free the Slaves a global force for freedom. Now is the time to redouble our individual efforts to open the lock for those in bondage.

Can you help end the conditions that cause modern slavery?
