There’s one word that defines what Free the Slaves has accomplished in our first 15 years of fighting for freedom: results. With your support, we have helped more than 10,000 people escape the brutal clutches of slavery.
And there’s one word we always hear from slavery survivors: thanks. Those who have regained control of their lives know just how precious freedom is. They are thankful that people they will never meet care enough about human dignity to contribute to the organization that helped them break free.
To commemorate our 15th birthday year, we’ve been documenting the remarkable transformation that comes when people move from slavery to freedom. I’d like to invite you to watch our Face to Face with Slavery film series during this Thanksgiving holiday season.
This series of poignant videos features slavery survivors telling their own stories in their own words:
- In India, residents of Sakdouri once lived in fear, beaten as slaves at a brick furnace. The slave holder threatened to throw them into the fire. But after a remarkable rescue, they are now free.
- Economic freedom is vital for trafficking survivors. That’s why we provide skills training and microenterprise support for survivors and their families. See this strategy change lives in the Congo.
- Courageous women in Nepal describe their enslavement while migrating for work, and how they now help others from falling prey to traffickers.
- Children endure inhuman conditions at gold mines in Ghana. Free the Slaves inspired one mother to take action to get her son out of danger.
There are 10 films in all. Whether you watch just one, or all 10, I’m certain you will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. You have made freedom possible around the globe. I hope you will continue to contribute this year during our 15 Years of Fighting for Freedom fall campaign.
All of us at Free the Slaves and our front-line grassroots partners wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving.
