Free the Slaves (FTS), in its unwavering commitment to eradicate modern slavery, recently conducted a transformative two-day training session in partnership with ALCD, generously supported by the National Endowment for Democracy. Held on August 25-26, 2023, the event gathered 11 dedicated public actors from ALCD to delve into the critical issues of modern slavery, the rule of law, and human rights.

The workshop commenced with an introduction to modern slavery’s varied types and underlying causes. Discussions highlighted the role of cultural practices and the pressing need for a unified definition of slavery, as per the conventions and legal frameworks. The session also emphasized the Mauritanian government’s commitment to this cause, aligning with global efforts like SDG 8 of Alliance 8.7.

Our bilingual approach (Arabic/French) ensured inclusive participation. The methodology involved presentations, group work, experience sharing, and debates, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the topics.

Key topics included a detailed examination of the different forms of modern slavery, including debt bondage, forced labor, and early marriage. The workshop explored the various factors leading to child labor and exploitation, such as poverty and cultural practices. The Mauritanian state’s commitment was discussed, focusing on national and international efforts to combat modern slavery, and the legal frameworks against human trafficking and child labor were analyzed. The rule of law was explained in terms of its pillars and implementation in combating slavery. Lastly, it focused on the roles and strategies for public actors in promoting education and eradicating child labor.

Participants showcased commendable engagement, evidenced by significant improvement in their understanding as reflected in pre and post-test results. The overall feedback was overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the effectiveness of our training approach.

The workshop concluded with vital recommendations, emphasizing the need for continued awareness and stricter law enforcement. Participants urged for a national strategy centered on human rights and victim protection, marking a significant step towards a world free from the shackles of modern slavery.

As the workshop wrapped up with a group photo, symbolizing our united front against modern slavery, the journey doesn’t end here. FTS remains dedicated to empowering individuals and communities, paving the way for a world where freedom and justice prevail for all.

Join us in this fight for freedom. Together, we can make a difference.
