Modern slavery remains one of the most pressing human rights challenges of our time, requiring collaboration across generations and sectors to drive meaningful change. At Free the Slaves, we believe in the power of youth to lead the way in raising awareness and advocating for solutions.

Building on the enthusiasm of young participants at the Asia Freedom from Slavery Forum in August, we saw an opportunity to further engage students in the fight against modern slavery. Recognizing the vitality and creativity of youth, especially in utilizing social media and advocacy, we partnered with Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, a premier academic institution in the Philippines, to conduct educational sessions through its National Service Training Program (NSTP).

Special Classes on Human Trafficking

From November 12 to 15, we led a series of four 3-hour classes and workshops, reaching over 110 students. The NSTP, a one-year program designed to develop civic consciousness and leadership, provided an ideal platform to discuss human trafficking and its impact on society.

During these sessions, students explored the complexities of human trafficking, the ways in which climate change exacerbates vulnerabilities, and the critical role of young people in addressing this global issue. The workshops encouraged students to develop actionable ideas, including:

  • Leveraging social media to amplify awareness within their communities.
  • Participating in local discussions to influence change.
  • Incorporating anti-slavery initiatives into extracurricular and personal projects.

These thoughtful and creative solutions demonstrated the students’ commitment to fighting modern slavery and their recognition of the urgency to act.

Empowering the Next Generation

It was an honor to lead these classes and witness the dedication of these young individuals. Their energy and innovative ideas reaffirm the importance of equipping the next generation with the knowledge and tools to combat modern slavery.

At Free the Slaves, we remain committed to our mission to engage youth, collaborate with educational institutions, and partner with local communities. Together, we can build a future free from slavery, where freedom and dignity are protected for all.

As we move forward, we are encouraged by the momentum generated through these programs and are hopeful for the change these young leaders will inspire in their communities and beyond.
