The COVID-19 state of emergency and curfew continues in the Dominican Republic as the contagion spreads. Hospitals are full. Government aid has not reached impoverished communities where Free the Slaves works because of discrimination toward residents of Haitian descent.
Villagers are unable to maintain social distancing as most families live in crowded conditions where everyone sleeps in the same room. Parents search for work – any work – without masks. Teenage girls are selling sex to tourists to survive.
We are especially concerned about the elderly. Most of them are completely alone and do not receive any kind of help. They live on the charity of neighbors.
Please help, today. I have launched a special GoFundMe campaign in partnership with Free the Slaves. People desperately need masks and personal hygiene kits to prevent the coronavirus from overtaking their villages.
- $20 USD provides a complete hygiene kit including hand sanitizer, masks, gloves and feminine hygiene products to a family.
- $25 USD provides a nutritional kit to one family for a week, and we will prioritize supporting families whose livelihoods have been harmed by COVID-19. These kits contain grains, fats, proteins and legumes in accordance with World Health Organization guidelines.
Learn more on the campaign webpage about how the pandemic is affecting human trafficking hot spots in the Dominican Republic. Our goal is simple: protect vulnerable families from COVID-19 and food insecurity. Every contribution helps. Please join our team by sharing the campaign on your social networks. Together, we can really contribute to positive change in a difficult time.
