Former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt once observed that “the future belongs to those who believe in their dreams.” At Free the Slaves, we dream of a future where everyone is free from slavery.
Roosevelt believed in that dream too. Freedom from slavery is near the top of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which she helped shepherd through the United Nations 71 years ago this month.
Making that dream come true is challenging. Our front-line teams are helping residents fight for freedom in communities where poverty, corruption and discrimination make it possible for slavery to persist. Our work is grounded in the values that support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We not only liberate the enslaved, we change the economic, political and social systems that make people vulnerable.
As we enter the year-end holidays, we are reminded of another insight from Roosevelt: “The important thing is neither your nationality nor the religion you professed, but how your faith translated itself in your life.”
We thank you for supporting the global struggle to end history’s greatest crime. Together, we can and will make slavery a thing of the past.
All of us at Free the Slaves – in the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Haiti, India, Nepal and United States – wish you a very happy holiday season.
