U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gets straight to the point: human trafficking is the act of “criminals selling people for profit.”
It could be anyone. Someone like you could easily be tricked into an opportunity that falsely promises a better life.
Which is why we need today, the United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. We all need to be reminded of the dangers of forced labor slavery, sex slavery and human trafficking. We all need to have that moment where we realize, “this could happen to me.”
The U.N. declared July 30th as world anti-trafficking day three years ago. It’s become a social media favorite and is commonly referred to as the Blue Heart Campaign. Throughout the day you’ll be seeing blue heart emojis on your Facebook newsfeeds and Twitter timelines.
So today, choose hope and join the modern abolitionist movement by using your social media platforms to take a stand.
By simply hash tagging #igivehope, you’re reminding slavery victims and survivors that their suffering has not and will not be forgotten. By using the hash tag #igivehope, you’re reminding governments at all levels that slavery was outlawed more than a century ago and must not be tolerated. By using the hash tag #igivehope, you’re lending your voice to organizations such as FTS, enabling us to confront trafficking head on.
To eradicate slavery and bring justice to those who have been trafficked, it must be a collaborative effort; we must work together to spread awareness. Without your voice, FTS wouldn’t be able to provide support for victims, survivors and those most at risk in India, Nepal, Congo, Ghana and Haiti. Today, let your followers and everyone else know that we should not be living in a world where slavery persists.
