Human Trafficking Prevention Month was created to build awareness that slavery still exists and to mobilize action to end slavery once and for all. There are two simple things you can do right now to help.
- Take International Political Action: Visit the 50 for Freedom Campaign and sign the digital petition to strengthen global trafficking laws. The U.N.’s International Labor Organization has passed a new anti-slavery treaty that needs to be ratified by countries around the world. Click the online petition to let your elected representatives know you want them to approve this new treaty.
- Take U.S. Political Action: Contact your U.S. Senators or House Representative and ask them to pass two important pieces of pending legislation. The first is the Business Supply Chain Transparency on Trafficking and Slavery Act, which will require companies to disclose what they’re doing to get slavery out of products you buy. The second is the End Modern Slavery Initiative Act, which will dramatically increase funding for U.S. anti-trafficking efforts at home and abroad.
If you haven’t had an opportunity yet to visit our special Take Action webpage, I hope you will take a few moments to do so this month. We’ve created a user-friendly portal of resources to help you host a house party to raise awareness, or to engage the faithful in your congregation, or to buy gifts that spread freedom—or to donate. By the way, everyone who makes a one-time donation of $25 or more in January will receive a Free the Slaves sticker.
I know that you’re with us throughout the year to help build a world without slavery, and I thank you for your ongoing support. I hope you will be able to take action this month to let your elected officials and your friends and family know that ending slavery is important to you.
