At the 19th Global Coordinating Group (GCG) meeting in Turin, Italy, the Kenyan government introduced a comprehensive strategy to combat child labor, forced labor, human trafficking, and modern slavery. With this step, Kenya has been recognized as a Pathfinder Country under the Alliance 8.7 framework, showcasing its leadership in the global fight against exploitation.

Kenya’s roadmap, presented by Hellen Apiyo, Ministry of Labour Commissioner, signals a new era in the country’s commitment to human rights and dignity. Rooted in Kenya’s Constitution and aligned with international standards set by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations, this plan emphasizes a collaborative and survivor-centered approach to systemic exploitation.
During the GCG meeting, Madam Apiyo acknowledged the invaluable contribution of Free the Slaves in championing survivor engagement and ensuring their voices shaped the roadmap. Her recognition highlights the organization’s pivotal role in fostering inclusive, survivor-centered strategies.
Collaborative Efforts at the Core
Kenya’s roadmap was developed through a whole-of-government approach, integrating efforts from government ministries, civil society organizations, social partners, and the Survivors’ Network. Survivor input was central to shaping the strategy, ensuring that real-world experiences informed practical solutions.

At the GCG meeting, survivor advocate Fauziah Wanjiru represented the Survivors’ Network, sharing her invaluable perspective.
